A bedroom is a distinctive, particular, and sacred space – it is, more often than not, a person’s sanctuary; where you go to relax, where you de-stress, where all your personal belongings are at home. Similarly, each item in your bedroom is just as unique as the individual that inhabits it. Each piece is an experiential article, buried in nostalgia, soaked with memories, and thus, entirely unique to characteristics of the person that they belong to. A bed is, perhaps, the most intimate one of them all; not only is it exclusive to the person that it belongs to, it might very well be the base-camp of your bedroom sanctuary. So in this article, we would discuss some ideas for styling your beds – to make it seem fun, to tap into your personal tastes, and to find what might reflect your tastes best.
1. Subtle with a splash
One way to style your bed would be to pick a color that is one part – the prominent part, or the highlighted part – of your interior design color scheme. Now take that color as a highlight, and match it with a contrasting color. Then choose a plethora of cushions in that scheme and pile them up high on the top of the bed, while the rest of it is in a contrastingly subtle tone. As demonstrated in the picture below, the prominent colors are pink and chocolate brown, the light color is an eggshell white; and together, they create a beautifully contrasting theme for the bed.
2. Merge with the Splurge
If your room is not a trademark contemporary, but a prepossessing plethora of one single, giant, wall art, then you have to style your bed, to match that affair. To make sure that the style of your bed is just as appealing as the wall art behind, make sure to use the color scheme of the same demographic – if the wall art is black and white, then the bedding scheme is also black and white. As not to take away from the art, make sure that there is one single bold element that overwhelms the design. In the example below, that element is the all black blanket, which makes a bold mark on the overall design.
3. Plain Jane
If you’re dealing with a situation, where the entirety of your room is done in a single color scheme, then you would have to dress and style your bedding accordingly. Given the nature of the color, the one that you would have to choose, would have to be completely contrasting, or complimentary. If it is grey, or silvery, then the best possible option, for a contrary scheme would have to be pure white. Not only would it set your bed apart from the rest of the room, but it would make it a highlight, and the first thing that would catch the eye when you enter the room.
4. Vintage Retro
Retro is most definitely defined by the use of popping colors and a contrary, conflicting color scheme. So, to style your bed in the retro style, you would have to choose the colors accordingly. A cherry red would be the perfect choice, and combined with the bold, curving lines of the embroidery of a duvet, it would definitely set your bed apart. The best option to get the optimum outlook would be to splay a set of pillows and cushions in the popping red, near the head board, and use the embroidered duvet or afghan, towards the bottom.
5. Classically Classy
If you’re going for subtle undertones, and elegant chic, then make sure to stay away from anything too funky. The classy look is achieved by an appealing color palate, which is both subtly exuberant, and tonally understated – with a bold use of the color white. With white as a backdrop, you have to match a light color that looks just as sophisticated, and swanky, as the style of the bed. The overall looks would be swanky, and understated, but atypically stylish.
6. Draping-ly Agrarian
Need a little bit of authentic drama in your bedding style? Then go for artful draping. Choose two contrasting colors for your bed spread, pillows, and blankets, then pull them out and over the bed accordingly – the pillows would be the darkest, the bedspread, the lightest, and the blankets, or afghan, draped across the footboard, a daring contrast to the rest of the scheme – both light and dark. It isn’t overly dramatic, but has a certain rustic appeal, and style. Not exactly high-toned, but it is definitely charming and inconspicuously chic.
7. Patch it Up
If you’re going for a bit of a hipster look, then this would be the perfect choice for you. In this style, you can combine every color that suits your sensibilities and combine it into one – granted that the backdrop is a unified finish. Take a clothing patch of every fabric that appeals to you, then combine it in a patchwork quilt, and use it as a cover or a bed spread. There is a certain artistic vogue to this design – it is both fashionable and has a shabby chic aesthetic.
8. Bring it Out
If your bedroom has a dominant color scheme that commands the overall environ of the room, then you have to style your bed according to that theme. In this scenario, all you have to do, is pick the color of your bedroom scheme for your bedspread, or duvet, and match it up with a pattern in a contrasting scheme – and make sure, that the pattern is more dominating than the color itself.
9. Frill it in
For a playful edge in your bed styling, try frilling it in. Now, this may not be classic, and if done wrong, can look more shabby, than chic, but if done right, could become the highlight of your bed. When choosing the color of your frill trimming, make sure that it is darker in hue than the rest of your scheme – that way, it would look edgy and refined.
10. Razzle and Dazzle
Specifically for an eye popping color scheme – you have to have two colors that make each other stand out. Yellow and orange are the best candidates – while one is popping in an understated way, the other makes up for it by being completely conspicuous. So while styling your bed in this theme, make sure that the brightest one is used in a less massive outlook.
